The Batyrkhan Shukenov Republican Contest of Woodwind Performers
2019
  • About the project:
In 2019, 26 performers and nine jazz bands from Nur-Sultan, Almaty and Karaganda, ranging in age from 16 to 32 years old, participated in the contest. The peculiarity of the second contest was the presence of a jazz nomination – as a tribute to Batyr’s love for jazz and Charlie Parker.

The performers’ contest was held in three stages. Round I – listening to the pieces on the video recording, round II – solo performance, round III – performance accompanied by an orchestra.

Leading ensembles of Almaty and laureates of international contests performed at the opening of the contest, including the student wind orchestra of the conservatory under the direction of Murat Bissenagaliyev, the ensemble of early music “D’EL’SA Consort”, the State quintet of woodwind instruments under the direction of Zhanat Yermanov, trombonists’ quartet, laureates of international contests, and winners of the past contest of wind instrument performers.
  • Jury:
The jury was composed of international masters – Marco Pierobon (Italy), Zhaniya Aubakirova (Kazakhstan), Felix Klizer (Germany), Fabris Milichier (France), Ilya Melikhov (Russia) and Baurzhan Shukenov.

“There are a lot of violinists, pianists, vocalists. And they are very famous. But musicians – brass players, they always stand modestly on the sidelines. The purpose of this contest is to draw attention to this environment, to find out what it breathes. The second task is to give the brass players an opportunity to go on stage. To let the best of them play with the orchestra. That was in the third round, and for many it was their first practice with a symphony orchestra, with a conductor”.
    Baurzhan Shukenov

Representatives of the foreign jury also highly appreciated the skills of Kazakhstan’s wind players and percussionists. According to German player on French horn Felix Klieser, he was pleasantly surprised that such large-scale contests are held in Kazakhstan.
